HHQ advises Geno Group’s blockchain integration into Malaysia’s EV infrastructure

By user on February 23, 2024

Leading Malaysian technology law firm Halim Hong & Quek (HHQ) is advising Geno Group Ltd as it embarks on a groundbreaking initiative to integrate blockchain solutions into Malaysia’s Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure.

Lead Partners: Ong Johnson and Lo Khai Yi

The Malaysian Automotive, Robotics & IoT Institute (MARii) is working with mobility provider ACO Tech and Geno to explore the implementation of blockchain solutions within Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.

Geno Group Limited, established in 2022 and headquartered in the United Kingdom, specialises in Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS). It offers enterprise solutions utilising blockchain or Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) tailored for industrial enterprises.

ACO Tech, a collaborative venture between Proton, ECARX, and Altel Communications, brings substantial expertise to the initiative.

The endeavor entails the formalisation of a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) between ACO Tech, Geno, and MARii.

This partnership aligns with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). With the government targeting 20% electrified vehicles (xEV) by 2030, 50% by 2040, and 80% by 2050, the agreement sets the stage for the sector to pioneer the utilisation of blockchain technology on a nationwide scale, a first of its kind in Malaysia.

Moreover, it supports the realisation of the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 by establishing a robust foundation for scaling the industry through the development of Next Generation Vehicles (NxGV), including EVs. Additionally, it contributes to the creation of a national EV-ready infrastructure through Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and blockchain as a service (BaaS) initiatives.

Lead partner Ong Johnson said “As we navigate the intersection of technology and law, we are delighted to provide counsel to Geno on this pivotal step towards reshaping Malaysia’s EV landscape with blockchain integration. It underscores the crucial role of combining EV technology and blockchain in mobilising resources to expedite the establishment and adoption of EV infrastructures.”

HHQ regularly advises on highly complex technology transactions in Asia Pacific. Most recently, our Technology Practice Group has been shortlisted by the Asian Legal Business as finalists in the Fintech Law Firm of the Year and Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) Law Firm of the Year categories.
